Used Book - History

Baker Book House was founded by Herman Baker as a used store in 1939. He began with only 500 books from his personal library. The original store was located at 1019 Wealthy Street, SE in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The business grew quickly under Herman Baker's leadership. Soon Baker Book House was selling new books and even publishing books. The years have brought tremendous growth to all of the Baker Book House enterprises including used books.

In 1980 the used book department, along with the main Baker retail store, moved to a new, much larger facility at 2768 East Paris Avenue, SE in Kentwood, a suburban area of Grand Rapids.

In addition to walk-in customers, we now serve customers by mail, phone, fax, and now e-mail from around the world. It is not unusual for us to both sell and purchase more books in one day than Herman Baker began with.
